Say it With a Rose – Rose Combination Meanings

There is no gesture as romantic as a gift of flowers, roses in specific. In the Victorian Era there was a meaning to flowers and how they were used. This language was called the language of flowers or floriography and it included many varieties of herbs, plants, flowers and such. The flower language was used to send messages that they did not wish to express out loud.  How the flowers were held, their size, and even the other flowers and plants they were grouped with added to this complex meaning.  While this custom is out of practice it can still add a romantic dash to any relationship.

Common Meanings of Rose Colors

Even though the language of flowers is no longer commonly in practice, the rose combination meanings are still quite well known.  The red rose is commonly thought to mean a passion, or a true and romantic love.  Burgundy, which would fall on the red category with indicate beauty or attractiveness.  Even the shades of a rose collar can change the meaning: for example: passion, love, and desire can be indicated by light pink whereas a medium pink could indicate grace and poise.  Gratitude might be indicated by a dark pink rose.

Rose Combination Meanings

When you combine colors the meaning of the roses becomes very complicated.  Even changing a flower from a rose two on other flower can alter the message dramatically.  Some of the common rose combinations meanings are listed below.

  • Red and yellow roses combined can indicate lighthearted happiness or gaiety.
  • Red and pink roses to gather indicate passion, love, and romance.
  • Red roses and a single yellow rose would indicate a desire to get to know you better but a mix of the red and yellow roses would indicate a celebration and or happiness.
  • Yellow and white roses will represent harmony or unity.

As the language of flowers is not in common practice today, when experimenting with it or sending a message you may wish to include a card that also expresses the emotion you wish to convey.  The recipient of such a gift is certain to be touched by your thoughtfulness. Roses are a special gift anytime and when you understand their meaning it is even more special. So if you’re looking to add an element of mystery and romance to your relationship and special occasion consider using the language of flowers.
