Christmas Gift Tips

Christmas is certainly the backdrop for some of the best memories of our lifetimes, but choosing the right gift for everyone on your list is not as easy for some folks as it is for the Man in Red at the North Pole.  Many people have “everything they want”, which complicates gift-giving to the extreme.  Let’s look at some of the best gifts for those on your list. 

Children

Children on your gift list may be (at first glance at least) the easiest to choose Christmas gifts for, and the gift you choose will probably be based on their age group.  Consider the following for:

 Babies

Babies must be given gifts that are safe for them, and remember that everything they touch until they are around two or even older in some instances – goes straight into their mouths!  Give babies toys that are age appropriate (this is usually indicated on the packaging).  Truly young babies won’t really know what’s going on when everyone else is opening gifts, so an appropriate gift for a young baby that can’t sit up yet is a clothing item, blanket, or even a décor item for the baby’s nursery. 

 Teens

Teenagers are complex creatures – which can sometimes hamper the gift selection that you have for them. Whatever electronics item is “hot” at the moment is a good Christmas gift idea for the teen recipient.  Both girls and boys in their teens enjoy clothing from the top designers, or a copy of a new movie that has been “all the rage”.  If all else fails, give teens a gift certificate for a store that carries their favorite clothing brand. 

Women

Buying a gift for a woman for Christmas can be challenging, but base your selection on the relationship that you have with her and her interests.  In other words, a functional gift of a new set of cookware may be just what your mother wants, but it may put you in the doghouse with your wife – unless it is something she has been wishing for.  Great Christmas gift ideas for women include fragrances and jewelry.  Although flowers are not typically given as Christmas gifts, sentimental tokens are – which makes the gift of roses that are eternally preserved in gold or platinum a wise choice that will make her holiday sparkle. 

Men

A good rule of thumb when purchasing a gift for men is to avoid the well-worn cliché gift of a tie.  Many men no longer wear ties, and those that do usually already have a good stock of them.  Men in general love electronics, so a gift of the latest gadget is probably making the tops of his wish list.  You might also consider a nice sweater or other cold weather gear if you live in a cold climate.  Many men are very “into” fashion and appreciate a nice fitting pair of jeans or a new pair of shoes as a Christmas gift.  You might also consider a good book or a subscription to his favorite magazine. 

In sum, selecting the perfect gift is all about determining what the recipient’s interests are, and finding a gift that they will find useful.

Wedding Gift Tips

Choosing the right wedding gift can be a perplexing and challenging task. There are so many people that are waiting until later in life to get married that by the time they do get married they already own all of the traditional things that you would buy for a new couple.  In many instances, they often have two of everything because they are combining households.

Trying to find the perfect wedding gift requires giving it a bit more thought than it used to.

  • If you are close to the bride and groom and know a few other folks that would like to go in on a gift, then there is a way to add to the couple’s excitement and enjoyment of their honeymoon.  There are websites that allow friends and family to contribute to the couple’s honeymoon fund.  The bride and the groom can be registered and the guests can contribute to the fund in lieu of a wedding gift. You can set this up for the bride and groom and let them know in advance that as your gift you started this fund for them and added the first X amount of dollars as their wedding gift.   • Give the bride and groom something they can use on their honeymoon - luggage! It is a practical gift but it will be a well used and appreciated gift.
  • Try to avoid the common wedding gifts like anything monogrammed or anything that is wedding themed. The couple will without a doubt receive tons of this stuff.
  • A gift certificate to a frame shop is an unusual gift by far but it can be used by the couple to frame their wedding pictures. Framing can be expensive so a gift certificate to a frame shop will really be appreciated.
  • If you have a talent that people normally pay you for, like photography or videography, or if you have a band, you can offer your services free or at a deep discount as a wedding gift. This is a great option and your services will be one of the best gifts.
  • A sentimental gift of flowers that memorialize their special day is also a great idea. You can order custom dipped roses that have been lacquered to a brilliant finish – dipped entirely or partially in gold, platinum and other metals. These roses are a great remembrance gift that the couple can have to look back at their special day.

Finding the perfect wedding gift does require some forethought. If you know the couple well and know what they like then your wedding gift can be focused on their shared interest. Buying a new home is exciting and it is customary to buy and present to the new home owner a housewarming gift. Plants, kitchen utensils, and statues are all largely overdone. Going outside the box a bit will be greatly appreciated.

With a little ingenuity you can come up with a great housewarming gift that will be appreciated and well used. The goal of gifting someone with a housewarming gift is to lighten the load for the recipients so that they do not have to break the bank trying to gather the things together that makes a house a home.

  • A great housewarming gift is a cleaning bucket filled with house cleaning supplies. You would be surprised how much cleaning supplies are appreciated. Cleaning supplies are one of those things you don’t think about buying until you need them and your thoughtful gift will certainly be used.
  • Towels and wash cloths are also always appreciated; you do not have to buy designer towels, either. A bunch or white towels presented in a large laundry bag would definitely get used and be appreciated.
  • Another great idea is to fill a hamper up with toilet paper and other bathroom items like toothpaste, mouthwash, bar soap, shampoo and conditioner. Although it is not technically for the house it will be appreciated. When someone is moving into a new place they may be so consumed with moving that they may not necessarily remember to take care of the basics.
  • Kitchen utensils, pots, pans or even a nice drinking glass set will be a welcome gift.
  • Something a bit unconventional as well is a gift certificate to a local grocery store. This would also be a great idea. A new home does not come with cupboards full of food.

Birthdays are such special occasions! Each birthday (especially milestone birthdays) comes but once – and honoring a special person is traditionally done amidst cake, balloons and presents.
